Not only must an executive lead his employees; he must also often lead his higher ups that are, he must persuade higher-ups to approve his plans in board meetings, conferences, and so on. There are seven points you must remember when seeking to influence these people:
1. Prepare; with plenty of detail, to present the matter in such a manner that it will impress others as having been thought though.
2. Put as much of the data as possible in the form of charts if practicable enlarge the charts and place them on exhibition.
3. Know thoroughly and precisely what recommendation you wish to make or what decision you wish others to make.
4. be conservative in what you ask for.
5. be prepared with figures to justify your request financially.
6. Although you will use detail, do not over argue or exhaust the subject with too much detail or too many words it, in your opinion, a matter is highly important, do not take no for an answer. Come back again with the project in another guise, with reasonable amendments.
In seeking to influence top management, it must be kept mind that their point of view is, of necessity, broader than that of the managerial executive.
Their point of view may be related to general economic or financial conditions, international conditions, a political situation, inter industry considerations, competition, stockholder interests or factions even personal factors, secret plans, or whatnot. The executive wishing to influence top management should consider all such possible angles, and try to understand their impact on the business.
